The oilseed crops research department has begun its activities since 1969 with to promote cultivating and development of major oilseed crops. The research activities in this department are mainly focused on oilseed rape, sunflower, soybean, sesame, and safflower. Introduction, breeding, and release of new adapted oilseed crops cultivars to be grown in different ecologies in Iran. Agronomic and physiological research and recommendations for better crop management are among the research priorities of this department. Research and scientific relations and collaborations with Iranian and international research centers and universities, participation in international conferences and training courses for researchers in international universities/institutions, exchanging information, and germplasm with developed countries are also among the activities of the department.

The research projects on oilseed crops are conducted at the national and provincial levels. Currently, approximately 60 research projects and 150 research experiments are being conducted at the headquarter (Karaj) and 36 research stations all across the country (Fig 1). Since the Islamic Revolution, 61 high yielding and well-adapted oilseed crop cultivars for different agroclimatic conditions of Iran have been released by the department (Fig 2).

The main objectives of the oilseed crops research department are as the followings:
•Providing and using genetic resources to improve of oilseed crops.
•Development and introduction of high yielding and well-adapted cultivars of oilseed rape, sunflower, soybean, sesame, and safflower for different agro-climatic regions of Iran.
•Maintaining the purity and increasing in different seed classes of the major oilseed crops.
•Improvement of oil content and quality of the oilseed crops.
•Development of new oilseed crops cultivars tolerant/resistant to abiotic and biotic stresses.
•Determining suitable crop management packages for newly released cultivars.
•Identification of suitable areas for the cultivation and development of oilseed crops.
•Supporting the transfer of research findings to the agricultural community by providing technical instructions, handbooks, and brochures.
•Applying new technologies and methods to speed up and increase the efficiency of research programs through workshops and field days.
•Establishment and expansion of scientific, technical, and research cooperation with Iranian and international universities and research centers.
•Promoting research findings through cooperation with the deputy of crop production, Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.

Sixty one high yielding and well-adapted cultivars for different agroclimatic conditions of Iran have been released by the department, including 18 soybean, 15 oilseed rape, 12 sunflower hybrid, 10 sesame, and 6 safflower (Fig 10). The royalties of the 16 released cultivars have been assigned to private seed companies.
